God dwells with his people

How lovely is your dwelling place,
    Lord Almighty!
My soul yearns, even faints,
    for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh cry out
    for the living God.
(Psalm 84:1-2)

The theme of dwelling has been one that has dominated the life of our Christ Central Soweto. The year began with us moving to a new venue in Pimville after staying five years in Klipspruit. Six months later we had to move again to our current venue (Musi High School in Pimville). During all this moving and upheaval, we have tried to secure occupation of the vacant land that we bought in Pimville, zone 6, which has been a slow, frustrating and unjust process.

Our church has learned to trust in God’s provision, but it has also been a helpful reminder to us that God’s mission is not limited by venues, or a sense of security, and our home is not defined by land, or buildings, but by the presence of the Lord, who dwells with his people.

Increasing the missional temperature

At the beginning of the year, we were challenged by the word of God, through the gospel of Mark, to have more of the mind of Christ and to be a more missional at church, in our homes and at work. This has been an exciting journey which has included a baptism service, our biggest Easter Weekend services, and a Mother’s Day service. In addition, we are now doing our first mission month event where we are addressing questions from the community in our series, ‘If I could ask God one question’. In this series we have addressed African Traditional Religion, the Second coming, Suffering, and Racism.

We are also hoping to have another baptism service before the end of the year. Pray that all these activities help us to build a culture of reaching out to the lost in our community and that many may be saved through the preaching of the gospel.

Bible studies taking shape

We praise God that our Connect groups (Bible studies) are slowly regaining moment after a decline during the pandemic. By the grace of God, we have been able to re-establish the in person Student Connect group as well as the Pimville Connect group. The virtual Connect groups remains the biggest study groups because of its convenience. Pray that we can get more of the congregation plugged into Bible studies.

Planning for 2024

The Spring season in South Africa is the time of the year where we usually begin assessing how the current year is going and start planning for the year to come. Given the see-saw nature of this year we may struggle to have perspective. Please pray for wisdom for the church council and ministry leaders as we plan for 2024. Pray that in all we do we keep relying on the Lord Jesus to grow his church.

Many thanks,

Musa Nting

Christ Central Soweto

Please pray for...

  • Pray for our continued conversations with the local councillor, as we seek to resolve the issue of us occupying the land we bought. Pray for wisdom and for a resolution to this matter.
  • Pray that through the various initiatives to reach out to the community, many may be saved and that we can entrench a culture of being missional disciples.
  • Pray that we can encourage more people in our church to get plugged into Connect groups and that people may see the value of small groups in their Christian walk.
  • Pray for wisdom as we begin planning for the year ahead.
