March 2021

If the Oranges are writing again so shortly after their previous communication, it is no doubt for a specific reason – and so we’ll keep this short and to the point.

Thanks so much to many of you who had expressed a desire to support the building project mentioned in our last letter – both praying that we might raise the funds and in contributing to the fundraising effort. We were encouraged by many positive signs, including a terrific response from within the congregation at Woluwe (more than €120,000 were pledged internally). But as we moved with the seller to sign a purchase agreement (with a couple of suspension clauses depending on securing the necessary loan from the bank) we heard at the end of last week that they no longer wished to sell the commercial space to us as we are a church. This came with no prior discussion and despite the fact that of course this had been raised at the outset. There is also no express clause in their ‘acte de base’ that excludes the space being sold to a church.

So it is with sadness that we are letting you know that this project has seemingly come to an abrupt end. If you have already contributed to this project, we will endeavour to return any sums transferred as soon as possible.

Of course it is disappointing but we will continue to wait on the Lord, thankful for his providential care of his people. Do pray with us that other opportunities might arise. We mentioned Proverbs 19.21 last time: ‘Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails.’ Pray that we will submit ourselves to his good and sovereign purposes.

In the meantime, as we head to Easter do pray with us that outreach activities both in Brussels and Louvain-la-Neuve (where our church plant is) and through the ministry of the GBU (which we remain involved in at a board level) manage to reach new people with the gospel of Christ. The Louvain-la-Neuve church and the GBU are hosting evangelism weeks from 22 – 28 March with some Bible Institute students helping out. Woluwe Church has an invitation evening on Saturday 3 April to proclaim our resurrection hope via YouTube.

We're thankful for a great annual women’s conference for our association of churches last Saturday and a large contingent of Woluwe Church women attended (virtually). It was an encouraging reminder of the thirst there is for good biblical teaching.

It may be that in April churches will be able to meet in gatherings of 50 people outside, so we're trying to think about how we might  put something in place that would enable that.

Regular Orange prayer points by Whatsapp? We’d love to add you to a group where we have been sending reasonably regular updates, plus the odd video. Click here to join.

Thanks so much for your prayers. Joyeuse Pâques!
