Robyn used her university language year abroad to serve God and to grow in her faith whilst improving her language skills. She spent September 2018 – February 2019 in Brussels, Belgium and February – June 2019 in Jena, Germany.
While in Brussels, Robyn served as a church apprentice at Woluwe Church (alongside mission partners Steve and Dawn Orange and Robbie and Lizzie Bellis). Le Stage 222 apprenticeship programme involves participating in the church student group, helping with mums’ and toddlers’ groups, teaching Sunday school, leading a youth group, reading the Bible one-to-one and studying one day a week at the Belgian Bible Institute – all in French!
In Jena, Robyn served at the church Evangeliumsgemeinde Jena. The church has a strong focus on expository preaching, personal discipleship and evangelism. There is an internationally acclaimed university in Jena and Robyn was involved with the church's student work as well as midweek bible study groups and children’s work.
It’s funny praying both that Jesus would come back soon ‘as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming’ (2 Peter 3:12) but equally praising him for the time we now have to speak of him with the unbelievers around us – ‘bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation’ (2 Peter 3:15a).
I’ve been very aware of this crossing the end of one semester and starting another…
My first set of language classes finished a couple of weeks ago but I’ve continued meeting up every week with a non-Christian and a Catholic friend I got to know through it, which is an answer to prayer - praise God! After weeks of struggling to speak very much of Jesus with them when we’ve gone for coffee, in God’s goodness and grace I ended up chatting this week with my Catholic friend about Easter and the Reformation; she seemed keen to read some of the Bible together!
