September 2022

With all wisdom and understanding, he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfilment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.’ Ephesians 1:8–10

Dear friends and partners in the gospel,

Greetings from Belgium! We’ve just started a new sermon series at the church plant in Louvain-la-Neuve (LLN) looking at Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. We were really struck by God’s amazing plan for Jesus to be the supreme King of all things at the end of time. It’s tempting to look at how few Christians there are in Belgium or how few men and women are being trained for gospel ministry and think that Jesus is weak. Or as we chat with the parents at our children’s school, it’s easy to think that Jesus is irrelevant and that the best life is lived without him. How wrong we are to think those things! Jesus is neither weak, nor irrelevant! He is the key to the future of this world. Please join us and pray that we would really believe this and that we’d be more and more confident in Jesus this year.

News since May
We’re very grateful to God for lots of things that have happened since our last prayer update. We had a good time as a church family over the summer months, preaching through Micah, then Psalms 8–11. We also had a good time as a family making the most of the month of July as the centre of Louvain-la-Neuve shipped in tons of sand to make a beach for children to play in! We were also able to get over to the UK in August to see our families which was really nice. The new term at school has started well for the children which we are grateful for.

Church day away in LLN

A new year with a church plant
It is now two years since we started our Sunday meetings as a church plant in LLN. In June, we had a Church Day away with teaching on God’s word, a practical workshop and time to relax and get to know each other better. We’re so grateful for the people that the Lord has sent to the church and we pray that God would continue to grow the Christians and that he would save the non-Christians who attend.

Church membership – first meeting on 2 October
We are nearly at the point of naming the first church members. These are people who want to commit to one another and to reaching the lost as a church in LLN. Our first members meeting will be on Sunday 2 October. Please pray for an encouraging and joyful time together.

Home groups and brotherly love
We are aware that although we know all the people who come to church quite well, they still don’t know each other that well. We are also praying that our home groups (Tuesday and Thursday nights) would be a good time of growing relationships with one another as we study Luke’s Gospel and share life together.

Evangelism – lunch talks and foodie evenings
Please keep praying for us as we seek to proclaim the gospel here in Louvain-la-Neuve. It feels like lots of people are very far from coming to one of our events, but please pray we would be bold, and that God would surprise us with people coming to hear the gospel this term. We have the following lunchtime events planned:
Friday 30 September: Do all religions lead to God?
Friday 4 November: Protestantism, Catholicism: what’s the difference?
Friday 2 December: The Bible: fairy story or fact?
We also have two evening themed events planned, where we will serve food from a particular country and interview a believer from that country. Please pray that the gospel would be clearly heard by non-Christians each time.
Friday 7 October: Tapas evening
Friday 25 November: Thanksgiving evening

Ministry trainees in Louvain-la-Neuve
We asked for prayer in May for Ministry trainees to come to LLN and be trained in gospel ministry in the context of the local church. Praise God, he heard and answered your prayers! Michael from Northern Ireland has started as a Ministry trainee with us as he explores the possibility of full-time word ministry in French-speaking Europe in the future. And Benjamin (our first ever Belgian ministry trainee!) has started with us as well. He is thinking about cross-cultural mission in the Middle East. Please pray for an encouraging year together and that we would all grow in our love for Jesus, his people and the lost.

Lizzie’s ministry
Please pray for Lizzie as she looks after the children during the week and as she writes resources for Sunday school on the book of Ephesians. Please pray also for C, a newish Christian at church, that Lizzie is meeting to open the Bible with, that she might be good soil and persevere in Jesus despite trials and temptations.

Thank you very much as always for your prayers. It’s such a privilege for us to be partnering with you for the cause of the gospel. Do get in touch and let us know how we can pray for you.

Robbie and Lizzie Bellis
