Playing our small part

Martin Lane

Emmanuel's connection with Crosslinks goes back to 1931, when Reverend Walter Kitley became vicar. Walter had previously been a missionary in China and then spent seven years as Organising Secretary of Crosslinks in the UK. Whilst vicar here in Hastings, Walter organised visits from Crosslinks missionaries and held an annual gift day in support of Crosslinks.

Fast forward 70 years and we are delighted to continue our links with Crosslinks. Our financial resources are limited so, whilst we pledge a certain level of financial support each year, our main support is through regular prayer for Jirka and Keira Kralovi (serving in the Czech Republic).

Our desire at Emmanuel is to take part in the work of taking the gospel to the nations and that is what we are doing in supporting Jirka and Keira. We love to hear news of the work they are doing with university students, the training courses that Jirka runs, the bible study resources he is writing and the church plant they are involved with. It is a privilege to be playing a part in this work, albeit from a distance.

When they were last in the UK, we were delighted to welcome the Kralovi family to our church. We had an interview and presentation in our morning service followed by a lunch in the church hall. This gave church members an opportunity to sit and chat with our mission partners and we all thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them. Jirka spoke in more detail about their work and there was time to ask questions and to pray together. It was a lovely time. More recently, we have enjoyed watching the video updates that Jirka and Keira produce in addition to their newsletters.

The latest idea that we are pursuing is a 'pen pal' scheme with the Kralovi children. The children in our Sunday club take it in turns to write a letter to the Kralovis. They include news from Hastings and ask questions about what they are doing in the Czech Republic. The letters are read out in Sunday club and then sent on behalf of the whole group. We hope that this is encouraging our young people to take an interest in and pray for the work of taking the gospel to the world.
