October 2020

When we moved out to Hungary in 2013 Acorn Camps had three team members (Andy, Zsófi and Anna) and a host of keen volunteers (from Hungary and the UK) who helped us do the work. In 2018 Krisztián Tóth joined the team – working part time whilst training (full-time!) to be a Baptist pastor.

Expanding the team: Zsófi, Anna, Szilárd, Krisztián and Andy.

This brought the balance of the team to two Hungarians and two Brits. This summer, after much prayer and planning, we were delighted to welcome Szilárd Tam into our team as a short-term mission partner through Crosslinks. This brought about a small but significant change: Hungary three – Britain two.

For most mission organisations this is always the aim: to partner with locals who can then develop the work and make it bigger and better. Szilárd has fitted in so well and brings a whole host of skills and experience. Previously he worked at a large Anglican church in London, helping run the youth work whilst attending the Cornhill Training Course. His passion for teaching the Bible well to young people is inspiring and it's so nice seeing him do that immediately with no language difficulties (Something Anna and Andy still find hard!).

Szilárd is also a huge blessing to our family and particularly our kids David, Réka and Emily. We work together running the youth group in our church and we are excited to see that ministry grow in depth and numbers. Praise God for the joy of frontline work – week-in, week-out church-based youth work – and the opportunity this gives us to model bible-based quality teaching.

CORE training: How to teach the Bible faithfully, relevantly and clearly to youth.

We also praise God for our second year of the CORE Training course. We have nine youth leaders eager to learn how to teach the Bible more faithfully, relevantly and clearly. Praise God for the way in which he knows exactly what we need. It's great to see that his timing is perfect.

Praise God for…

  • A last-minute church family camp in the summer (when pandemic restrictions were lifted). There was encouraging bible teaching about Jesus giving life to Lazarus and us, new friendships and serving opportunities.
  • Enthusiastic youth leaders from across the denominations starting the new CORE training course this Autumn.
  • The opportunity to start a new youth group at our home church, Sarokkő, for younger teenagers at the request of parents.
  • Our new colleague Szilárd, who has been a real blessing and encouragement to the team and also our family.

Please pray for...

  • New younger youth group in masks.
The Core training course to still be effective in preparing the students to teach the Bible to young people under restricted circumstances.
  • Partner churches in the UK to be able to send out teams to Hungarian churches to run bible-centred camps next summer.
  • The youth groups we are involved in. May the Lord change young people’s lives as we study the book of Daniel and train up leaders for the future.

Thank you so much for your ongoing support and prayer. Isten áldjon! (God bless you!)

Andy, Zsófi, David, Réka and Emily
