December 2019

Thank you so much for partnering with me in prayer as I head to Thailand for the next couple of months. Even though I'm only going to be serving with Crosslinks for a short time, I really value your prayers.

As you probably know, this trip is part of my ‘gap year’ as I take time to recover from a tough couple of years leading up to leaving my teaching job. I am excited to be able to use part of this time to serve God and the gospel in Thailand.

As the date of my departure approaches (Monday 6 January), I would value your prayers for the next few weeks in particular. I have never lived overseas and have never been engaged in full-time gospel ministry so there will be lots to adjust to and at this stage I still don’t really know what to expect.

What I do know is that I will be living and working in Chiang Mai in the north of Thailand. I will be working alongside Crosslinks mission partner Janet at The Centre. I will be teaching English conversation classes to university students and seeking to befriend them with a view to being able to share Jesus with them. Janet has sorted out accommodation for me and I will be living in an apartment on my own near to The Centre. Each weekday I will spend afternoons and early evenings teaching at The Centre and then go out for something to eat with the students. I hope to join an English women’s bible study group on Wednesday mornings and plan to attend an international church that meets on Sunday afternoons.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10

I am grateful for this opportunity to serve with Crosslinks and to those who suggested that I consider a short-term mission placement. Please pray that I will have a servant heart during my time in Thailand. Pray that I will work hard at The Centre and help the students with their English. Pray that I will build up good relationships with others on the team and with the students, and that I will have both opportunities and confidence to share the gospel. The latter certainly doesn’t come naturally so please pray that I will be bold.

Please pray that I will be faithful in personal bible study and prayer and that I will use the time away to seek God’s will for the longer-term future. Please pray particularly that I will establish good routines quickly as I know that my prayer life tends to suffer when I don’t have a routine. I would love for these two months to be a time when I learn to delight more and more in prayer and time in God’s word.

Please pray for practicalities as I travel and find my feet: that I will take what I need and not what I don’t, that my flights will be hassle free and that I will arrive in Chiang Mai on the Tuesday evening as planned, and that getting my work permit and health check will all go smoothly. Pray that the apartment I’m staying in for the first two weeks would provide a good base as I settle in, and for good working relationships with Janet and others on the team at The Centre.
