The South Africa Gap Year Team served in Johannesburg from January to April alongside mission partners James and Lucy Buchanan.
The team was led by Kirsty McLaren and included Eliza Durham, Molly Tuck, Emily Crutchley and Eleanor Greenwood. The helped with the youth and children’s work at Hope Church, as well as studying part-time at Johannesburg Bible College. Through this, they gained experience in giving talks and leading bible studies as well as teaching children and young people the gospel.
Dear friends and family,
Welcome to our final prayer letter. It’s crazy to think that just three weeks ago we were on the other side of the world, and now we’re back to our normal (well, normalish!) UK lives. But before we get to that there’s a lot to catch you up on from our last two weeks of living in South Africa.
As you may know, on Thursday 26 April at midnight, South Africa went into lockdown. Although this was to be expected, it was still a slightly daunting prospect to head into the next few weeks with no idea what each day would hold. But, in hindsight, our time in lockdown was genuinely really enjoyable. We grew closer as a team and closer to the rest of the Craven cottage (Adam, Surprise, Lindo and Kutlwano) - we became our own (slightly quirky) version of a family in lockdown! We occupied ourselves with dying our hair pink/red (twice), starting an April Fool’s pranks war, baking and eating more food than you would’ve thought possible, and many games/movie nights. And of course we can’t forget Ellie’s 19th birthday! We had great fun raiding Spar’s selection of balloons, banners, candles and even flamingo napkins (all ‘essential items’ of course!). Eliza made not just one, but two incredible banana cakes and we spent the evening playing old school party games including musical chairs and pass the parcel.
