Servants of the Word building appeal

“I used to think the Bible was all about us and what we need to do. Now I see it’s all about Jesus and what he has done for us.”

(Abdul - Student, Class of 2015)

“Every pastor in The Gambia needs to be learning this!”

(Sangpierre - Student, Class of 2016)

Over 90% of Gambians are Muslims and the majority of professing Christians mix ‘Christianity’ with idol worship and superstition. Amongst the few who sincerely follow Christ, there is a desperate need for leaders who will be devoted to word-led servant-leadership, by carefully listening to and teaching God’s word. Tragically, Christ-centred grace-filled preaching is appallingly rare.

Servants of the Word (SOW) is in its eighth year of running part-time classes for pastors, evangelists, children’s workers and others, attracting students from a wide range of ages and nationalities (The Gambia, Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana, Guinea and Sierra Leone). This sort of training is desperately uncommon in the whole of West Africa, so there is a wide and exciting potential impact that SOW can have.

The Future

Currently SOW can only run part-time classes in rented classrooms, which makes it hard for many to attend regularly. But they have a bold vision for the future: work is underway to develop a residential site from which they can offer full-time courses. The new campus in a strategic location for the whole west Africa region. Courses offered will continue to train people for bible-teaching ministries, focusing on preaching and discipleship.

The Need

The first phase of building (2015-2018) was met with wonderful support, enabling SOW to construct the perimeter wall and classroom block. The second phase (2018-2019) also brought in funds to build a first dormitory block. These facilities are to be put to use as the school begins in September 2019.

Now, SOW is seeking support to build a crucial admin block, including dining facilities and a library. Please consider giving to the ongoing work using the giving box on this page.

UPDATE July 2019

Work on site is currently focused on completing the dormitory block before students arrive in September. The roof is going on and, once finished, work can begin on plumbing, plastering and finishing. The builders are also currently constructing a water tower, that will pump water up from the borehole to run into the bathrooms and toilets.

Please pray on for the provision of electricity: it has been a frustrating process so far, with no obvious or affordable solution.
