Nick and Harriet moved to The Gambia in June 2018 to be involved with a small bible school - Servants of the Word (SOW).
Evangelical Christians make up less than 1% of the population of The Gambia and most Christian leaders have had no formal bible training. SOW was established in 2012 to train local gospel workers in preaching and bible-teaching ministries. However, more theologically educated teachers are needed to deliver the course and disciple the students.
Nick is teaching at SOW, as well as helping with the work of GAMFES (Gambian Fellowship of Evangelical Students) and the ministry of local churches. As well as caring for their three young children (Phoebe, Arthur and Olive), Harriet is using her experience as an English teacher to help those with poor literacy to access the course at SOW.

There’s much to update you on since out last newsletter. We ended up returning to the UK after the SOW term finished – mainly so that Arthur could attend an appointment he had concerning his eyes and to get the children’s immunisations up to date. We were glad that we did this as we discovered that the sight in Arthur’s squint eye has deteriorated and he needs patching. Unfortunately, they were unwilling to put him on the waiting list for squint surgery next summer because we won’t be in the country over the year so that is something we will need to pursue when we return.
