Nick and Harriet moved to The Gambia in June 2018 to be involved with a small bible school - Servants of the Word (SOW).
Evangelical Christians make up less than 1% of the population of The Gambia and most Christian leaders have had no formal bible training. SOW was established in 2012 to train local gospel workers in preaching and bible-teaching ministries. However, more theologically educated teachers are needed to deliver the course and disciple the students.
Nick is teaching at SOW, as well as helping with the work of GAMFES (Gambian Fellowship of Evangelical Students) and the ministry of local churches. As well as caring for their three young children (Phoebe, Arthur and Olive), Harriet is using her experience as an English teacher to help those with poor literacy to access the course at SOW.

We are two weeks away from the end of the school year here at SOW and we find ourselves (perhaps as is always the case at the end of term?) exhausted in body and spirit! We have found the last few months challenging for various reasons. Most recently we have been disappointed by poor turn out at the open day, the alumni conference and an outreach event with a dentist clinic. We have also been finding the cultural gulf difficult in work and relationships.
Psalm 93 has been a comfort to us lately. It has reminded us that however things may look, God is on the throne and he is mighty: ‘The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty… Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea, the Lord on high is mighty'. What an awesome image!
