October 2018

Dear Friends,

Warm greetings from Mzansi (South Africa)! It’s the last term of the year and we are excited to tackle the second module of our training manual. Titled Equipped with the Skills, this module is all about how to develop bible handling skills. It’s much more practical and pragmatic in its approach. The focus will be on developing skills that will help our apprentices in their study of the Bible and in their preaching.

APPRENTICE PROFILE: Sivuyisiwe Maboza

I'm Sivu, a 22 year old former Nelson Mandela University student and currently an apprentice at Word of Life student church in Port Elizabeth. Our ministry focuses on discipleship, leading small groups but also nurturing our own personal relationships with the Lord.

Our Ministry Apprenticeship Training has not only fed into my passion for God’s word but also equipped me to handle Scripture well. I'm now convinced more than ever that the Scriptures are truly sufficient – for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. The authority of Scripture and its relevance in our contemporary context is another important principle I was taught. For me it means being careful not to read ideas into the text but rather letting its truth come to light. I’ve been forced to think differently about the Bible and its relevance. It’s also very liberating and comforting to know that God's Word is not silent about the current struggles we face in South Africa... and the world at large I suppose!

I've been invited to conduct a bible teaching seminar for a number of Baptist churches in one of our local townships. This is a real breakthrough and opportunity to serve, connect and introduce the MAT concept to pastors and lay people in our townships. Please pray for the Lord's guidance as I prepare for this event. Pray also that this seminar will lead to a closer working partnerships with church leaders in the townships.

PLEASE PRAY FOR:

  • A good number to turn up for the seminar and the Lord’s guidance in my preparation.
  • Apprentices to persevere and keep focus in this last but often difficult term.
  • For Sivu as well as the rest of the apprentices as they learn, reflect and grow in their understanding of the Gospel.
