Kayley spent her gap year serving alongside Crosslinks mission partners James and Lucy Buchanan in Johannesburg. She served as an apprentice at Hope Church Auckland Park, primarily helping with the crèche, children’s work and youth group. She also read the Bible with teenagers and helped out with Easter holiday club and administrative tasks. In addition, Kayley spent two mornings each week studying at Johannesburg Bible College.

I’ve never been particularly good at goodbyes and it’s been sad to already be counting lasts. I had my last week at JBC, my last time teaching kids club and last evening service this week. With just under a week left it seems that goodbyes are in anticipation and big plans are being made for the rest of the year when Alice and I will no longer be here to see these plans through at Hope Church.
Firstly and quite sadly we had our last week at JBC. It’s been so encouraging to study God’s word amongst such a diverse mix of people from journalists to ex-criminals, from parents to grandparents, church apprentices to university students, people who have travelled from Uganda to Malawi, growing up in rural villages to even a London born girl on a gap year! It’s amazing how God has brought us all together and how united we can be in the gospel. We have had some crazy ice breakers, from being dressed up in newspaper, writing a rap about bible college and some competitive rounds of charades! At JBC we have also had some real truths reinforced and tough questions asked about engaging the gospel to different types of people and what it means in a modern world. It was bitter sweet to say goodbye to everyone and Alice and I were thoroughly spoilt and had a surprise party after class with crisps and koeksisters (Afrikaan coconut donuts).
