Jaki returned to the UK in December 2020 after serving in South Africa since 2013. Before this, Jaki served as a short-term volunteer in Cape Town from 2009 – 2011.
Jaki initially went to South Africa to serve with a Christian homelessness charity for two years. After a short time back in the UK, Jaki returned to Cape Town as a Crosslinks mission partner. She studied at a local bible college for three years then served for two years as a curate at St Stephen's Church. Most recently, Jaki has worked with Trinity Church and Trinity Children's Centre in Mitchell's Plain.
Trinity Children’s Centre is a Christian school that reaches out to children in a community full of violence, drugs, poverty and inequality. The centre provides a space where children can receive an education, be supported through their challenges and hear about the God who loves them. Jaki headed up the interventions team and has now handed this role over to a local woman. Jaki also worked with adults in the community, sharing Christ with them and supporting them through difficult circumstances.
I was chatting with another missionary last week and we spoke about 'home'. ‘Where is home for you?’ she asked. ‘Hmmm I guess I have two homes, I have my home here and then I have home home.’
But where is home? It's a place where you belong and where you love and are loved – it’s a place where you feel secure (even when it's not a safe place!).
I came to South Africa as a one-year-old baby Christian. I came for adventure and to share the gospel – the gospel that one day Jesus will come back and either there is a room prepared for you in his house or there is not. I look forward to my forever home with Jesus and I look forward to being reunited with the many people that I have lost along the way here in South Africa.
