Between each academic year at university, I am fortunate enough to have three months over the summer to spend how I choose!
Earlier this year, after some thought and encouragement from others, I decided to spend a few weeks serving a local church in any way that they would find helpful. I looked for different opportunities available and very soon I was on a train to Brussels to help a team of Crosslinks mission partners (Robbie and Lizzie Bellis, and Steve and Dawn Orange) at Woluwe Church (L’Église Protestant Evangelique de Woluwe).
I loved getting involved in a wide range of activities with different parts of the church family. I helped lead Sunday school and Bible studies, ran games and kept peace at a youth group sleepover! I also gave a hand with some DIY, got involved with student ministry and supported Crosslinks mission partners with mid-week evangelistic events and first-contact evangelism.
I was in Brussels for just over five weeks. I learnt a lot and was greatly encouraged by faithful gospel work done in a culture that is even more secular than I have found in London. Being involved with Woluwe Church was encouraging, thought-provoking and great fun. I look forward to seeing the people I have met again one day and to see what the church will have become!
There is a great need for gospel workers worldwide and many Crosslinks mission partners would be delighted to receive short-term volunteers. Very rarely in my life do I have several months free to use how I please. If, like me, you are a student and considering working for a church or as a missionary in the future, the university holidays are a perfect opportunity to try something new and to get a taste of overseas mission! My time in Brussels has given me just that, and I would recommend contacting Crosslinks to see what options are available.
