Adam is spending two years serving in Johannesburg, South Africa, training as a ministry apprentice at Hope Church Auckland Park.
Hope Church Auckland Park holds out the good news of the gospel to the diverse communities in the city. It is led by mission partners James and Lucy Buchanan and, though the church is growing fast, it is in great need of more workers.
In 2016, Adam spent six months serving at Hope Church Auckland Park. He writes, ‘It was a fantastic time to serve in so many areas of church life and experience the very diverse culture and gospel needs that are in Johannesburg.’
As a ministry apprentice at Hope Church, Adam’s primary focus is on youth work, but he is also involved in other areas of church life. Adam also attends Johannesburg Bible College for two mornings each week.
The beginning of the year presented some changes in my role. Last year, my primary area of ministry was youth work and my secondary area was music. This year, my primary focus remains with the youth but I’ve been moved to assist with student ministry. I’m grateful for new opportunities to serve in this my final year of internship.
Wonderfully, my involvement with student ministry includes helping out at a larger student gathering called ‘Engage’ six times a year. We’ve already had two of these this year. At the most recent gathering we looked at politics and how Christians can engage with the current political landscape in South Africa. With the general election coming up on 8 May this was a pertinent, encouraging and challenging session. Through these ‘Engage’ events we aim to draw in as many students as possible to grapple with current issues with a biblical perspective and so draw even more students into bible studies in the area.
