What is Ryan van der Avoort doing?
Ryan van der Avoort is a 22 year old South African working as an apprentice at Christ Church Glenwood and The Bible Talks student ministry in Durban. These ministries are in partnership with one another and consist of a morning congregation which meets in a high school, and two student congregations which meet on the university campus. As part of the church’s commitment to build up and send out, they are always keen to have apprentices who can be actively involved in the life of the church, especially within the areas of evangelism and discipleship.
As well as these priorities, an apprentice has four other key areas of work: Being trained for Word ministry, general administration, practical service and pastoral work.
Ryan has the desire to pastor a church in the future, and is using the apprenticeship as an opportunity to test whether he has the necessary gifting for this. Either way, these next two years will provide Ryan with many opportunities to serve God and share the good news about Jesus with others.
Objectives
By the end of two years, it is hoped that the Lord will have enabled the following to be achieved through this initiative:
For Ryan to have been trained through the two year Ministry Apprentice programme
To increase the number of people, particularly students, who are being read the Bible with one-to-one
To have had more people hear, and hopefully respond to the gospel, than would have without Ryan being on the church staff
Costs involved
Supporting a local person is cost efficient compared to the costs of training and supporting someone in the UK. Crosslinks has agreed funding of £4000pa for 2007 and 2008. This covers Ryan’s salary each year
