The Biblical Understanding for In-service Leadership Development (BUILD) programme was begun in Uganda in October 2004. Its mission is to equip the Church of Uganda’s grassroots pastors and leaders to build the church: First, through training these leaders with a practical understanding and application of Scripture and theology to their lives, churches and communities; and second, through equipping them as trainers of trainers who can then also equip others to serve and build the church.
BUILD is primarily a non-formal strategy for strengthening the grassroots pastors of the Church of Uganda’s many congregations. It is not designed to be ordination preparation, but rather to provide in-service training for all those involved. An additional impact of the programme is its natural effect on other types of leaders in the Church and the churches.
While the training began with the methods and materials of Veritas College, it is now an independent programme of the Church of Uganda (CoU), and its own curriculum is being developed and its capacity is growing.

Objectives
Over the next three years, it is hoped that the Lord will have enabled the following to be achieved through this initiative:
To formally train accredited coordinators and facilitators for the programme, by running a Certificate course in partnership with Uganda Christian University and the CoU.
To assemble teams of both formally and non-formally trained pastors and leaders who will run the BUILD programme at a diocesan, parish or local level.
To train local pastors, leaders and lay-people through the programme, and so promote mutual encouragement and building-up throughout local churches and communities.
Costs involved
Crosslinks has agreed funding of £7000 for 2007, £6000 for 2008 and £5000 for 2009. This contributes towards set-up, co-ordination and training costs, and covers a large proportion of the total budget.
