The Tarlings returned to the UK in summer 2008
Rachel was Diocesan Medical Officer, for the Anglican Diocese of Mpwapwa in Tanzania. She has been establishing, on behalf of the 14-year diocese, St. Luke's Health Centre which is essentially a General Practice combined with on-site Laboratory and Dispensing facilities, plus MCH (Maternal and Child Health) Clinics in eight of the neighbouring villages. In addition, since 2001, the work has expanded to include HIV/AIDS education and counselling, both at the Clinic and in the wider community. In 2005 a newly built Maternity Wing was opened to allow those with known safe deliveries to give birth in a clean safe environment - plans are in hand to add a theatre for Cæsarean sections to ensure that all complications and emergencies could be given equal opportunity.
Godfrey was Diocesan Surveyor. He has been setting up and running a Building Engineering Department and Surveying Office. This has entailed selecting and training key individuals in design, supervision and management skills. It has also included strategic projects to improve basic infrastructure, including the construction of secondary schools, medical health centres & dispensary outposts, a Kindergarten and Library for a Local Government Primary School (which was officially opened by His Excellency President Benjamin Mkapa in 1997), the development of the Cathedral and its immediate site, the development and restoration of buildings at the Provincial Theological College, St. Philip's, Kongwa, and the oversight of Parish Churches and pastorages. In addition there are land boundary surveys to be undertaken in order to register land with the Tanzanian Government.
They have three children Esther (b1995), Christopher (b1997), and Timothy (b2001)
We are grateful for a team of churches, individuals and trusts that support the work of Crosslinks. In 2006 we were pleased to have the support of Irish Aid for the Tarlings
