The Hovils are based in Cape Town but joined Crosslinks as Associate Mission Partners in Uganda where they lived for eight years. They have three children: Hudson, Tess and Charlie.

Jem trained originally in science and education before serving on the staff of two UK churches. The first was in Cambridge and then, after theological college in Oxford, he moved to London where he was ordained, served a curacy and completed his masters in applied theology. Jem’s work in Uganda included developing a training initiative for grassroots pastors in the Church of Uganda and documenting that for his doctorate in theology.

Jem directs the Entrust pastor training programme of E3 Initiative. E3 Initiative works with local partners to empower grassroots churches in community mission, and does so from the perspectives of training pastors and supporting responses to HIV and AIDS. Lucy is the senior researcher for a human rights initiative, focussing on issues of displacement and citizenship in the Great Lakes Region and also works as an editor of an international journal on justice in post conflict situations. Jem and Lucy are involved in Muizenberg Community Church.
