the story behind Cristóbal Cerón

Cristóbal Cerón

'One Friday night after youth group finished and we were locking up, a man in the house opposite started screaming very violently. The scene was quite shocking; we just were able to see the window and the shadows of the man threatening another person. The man had a glass in his hand which he threw to the floor. Then he went to his kitchen, and came back with a knife. I called to the man telling him to come out. So he did. Being clueless as to what to do I just held his hand firmly and I started to pray for him aloud.

My wife did not know what to think. Imagine the scene, the man has a knife in his hand and her husband is holding that hand and praying for the man. It was like a horror movie.

The Lord was good. He made his presence manifest and the man began to cry in front of us! He said he was sorry and he received the peace of God that night and left us to go for a walk! Glory to God!

Nevertheless, he was slave to drugs as many in the townships in South Africa are. Many people have an encounter with God, they know his faithfulness and his power to take them out of their slavery, but somehow many go back to their ways of living. For him this was the case. The following night he broke a bottle in his cousin's neck.

We pray that the gospel of Jesus Christ may reach deeply into thousands of lives not only where we have been working but into millions of townships around the world so that many may be rescued from darkness into His wonderful light.'

Cristóbal's account of his experience whilst on placement as a study partner in South Africa has been edited.

Usually study partners train in their own country, but in Cristóbal's case a suitable course was found in South Africa rather than his native Chile. Cristóbal and his wife have found the South African experience and the hands on nature of the course has enriched their understanding of mission
